Annual Family Reunion

Early this morning, cousin Dustin, Collin and I got in the car for a two hour road trip to participate in the annual family reunion.  Neither Collin nor Dustin slept on the way there.  Collin was excited about seeing his cousins and thought, at first, that he was seeing his other cousins Ben, Will and Hollis until I told him these were other cousins.

For the first time that I can remember, the reunion had a theme.  This year, it was Mexican themed so that all of the food and activities were generally focused on that theme.  The first thing Collin and some of his cousins did was to make and/or pop bubbles in the front yard.  I brought several different colored bubble wands that made gigantic bubbles.  On the way to the reunion, Collin pretended one of the wands was a "shooter gun" and was shooting the road or the cows as we drove by.  Here are the kids enjoying the bubbles:

It was then time to test the salsa and guacamole for the taste contest.  I started doing it with the others and Collin said "I want to do the same as you" which meant he wanted to use the chips to test the salsa with me.  I tried one of salsas and was not interested after that because he saw one of the younger cousins eating a snow cone.  "What's that Mommy?"  We walked over so he could make his own.  He loved scooping the chopped ice into his cup and then choosing the different syrup flavors.  For his first snow cone, yes, he ended up having three of them (all partially eaten) was a mixture of watermelon and grape.  He took his first bite and then looked at me..."this is really, really yummy to my tummy!"  We did not have lunch yet, so he only ate one before lunch.

While waiting for lunch to be ready, he wanted me to hold him up over and over again so he could see the baby birds that were living on one of the shelves on the patio.  He said, "Mommy, the birds are tiny" and "they are so cute".  At first, I did not mind holding him up but I did get tired of his after the 15th or so time of doing it.  Luckily, cousin Brad stepped in and held Collin so he could look at them.  Twice, one of the birdies jumped out of the nest and someone put the birdie back.  After seeing that, Collin still wanted to look at the birds but not as close as before.

Collin probably had the most fun when it came time for the water gun fight.  Most of the bigger kids got in the pool for the fight but Collin and Evan were happy to use their guns outside of the pool.  I was happy about this because I did not bring my bathing suit for me to help Collin in the pool.  He stood on the outside and shot his water gun towards the people in the pool or if they were walking around it.

I know Collin was having fun at the reunion because several different times throughout the day, he said, "Mommy, I am having fun".  He did not have to tell me this though because it was really obvious that he was.  The next activity was the pinata.  Collin was the first one to swing at it because the order when youngest to oldest.  There were three pinatas so he did get to try it several times.  Each time, he swung the stick hard and hit the pinata each time.  At first, he did not understand what the purpose of it was.  Once the first one was broken, he quickly figured out that there were candy and prizes in there.  He got right in there and chose gum, whistles and Smarties.  I LOVE Smarties so I was really happy with his choice.  While waiting for his next turn, he sat in a wagon close by checking out his loot.  He wanted me to help him make sure that no one else was going to eat it.

When he was not playing, he was following some of his female cousins around.  He really liked Kendall the best but also spent time with Madison and Kristin.  Even him and Evan had a pillow fight that was hilarious to watch.  They were mainly focused on the winner of each round and laughed the entire time doing it.

He really had a great time today playing with his cousins so much so that he did not want to go home. Since he did not take a nap (not that I thought he would), I changed him into his PJs before going home. As expected, he was not ready to go and put up a fight. However, within 10 minutes of leaving, he looked like this:
