Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

We have been having so much fun to our trip to northern New Mexico that I have not had a chance to update the blog yet. We took a day to rest from our 16 hour drive the first day. We spent the day walking and checking out the area around the house. Collin has a friend with him, Foard, so they can hang out together and because his parents are out of town this week also.

For our morning adventure, we drove just outside of Taos to see and walk across the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. What a beautiful site! It was so worth the 45 minute drive up and over the mountains to see it. Foard was afraid of heights at first so he stayed back while we walked to the edge of the gorge. Eventually, he got up the nerve enough to walk over to another location to check it out. While at the edge, we saw several rafters floating down the Rio Grande river. The boys thought this was great to be able to see this through the binoculars that I brought. We then walked across the bridge and back. At one point, Collin wanted to go back to the car because two large vehicles or trucks passed by on the bridge at the same time causing it to shake a little bit.  He did not like this, and immediately turned around and started walking briskly back to where we came from. Dad went to go get him and calm him down to come back to where we were all standing. Both boys thought it very interesting to look at the black ribbons tied along the bridge representing people that possibly died there.  Some ribbons included names and a year while others included the word "Unknown". We learned that this was a very popular spot to commit suicide so much so that there were suicide hotline spots at points on the bridge. They thought that very interesting and wondered why people would want to commit suicide and why they would do it on purpose from a bridge. That sure is a hard one to explain to somebody that's enjoying life and couldn't possibly think of why somebody would want to do that to themselves. It was also nearly impossible to get either one of them off the subject!

After looking at the bridge, we headed back to town to do a little shopping and to get lunch. Collin found a place that had sheepskin and could not get enough of it. He loved how soft it was and told me that he would be on his best behavior, do what I tell him to do, and go to sleep quickly every single night if he could buy one of these with his money. That was a very convincing arguments for sure! We did tell him to pass on buying this time and said we could always come back later in the trip if he was still thinking about it.  The shop next door was really great and had tons of pillows and other things to look at. The boys were really tired and getting hungry so we left to find something to eat. There was a local cafĂ© that used locally grown foods. My kind of place! We chose there to stop and eat and rest a little before doing some more shopping. After lunch, we drove into town to do a little more shopping. One of the places had hacky sack's which the boys had never seen before. We t thought thought this might be fun for them to play with so we bought one for each boy. I really liked the place because there was a lot of Talavera pottery. I have always liked Talavera pottery because of the vibrant colors. I ended up buying a little pottery chicken to keep at the mountain house. We walked around a little more before heading back to the house.

We had dinner and then played several games of Skip Bo. This is usually really fun card game but can get very loud with too excited, and competitive looking boys! Now that they have the hang of the game, they want to play anytime we're back at the house. It's better than being on the electronics my ears need to rest in between each game. Ha ha ha

Having a great time so far and cannot wait until our next adventure tomorrow.
