Tri Madness

It’s just the way the triathlons were scheduled that it turned out: competed in three of them over a 3 to 4 week period in addition to playing lacrosse in touch football... and scout activities and going to school. He is not a boredkid for sure.

Texans Tri
The first triathlon Collin competed in is a huge event because it’s the largest kids triathlon in the city with over 3000 participants. It feels that way also while waiting for your child to compete and maneuvering around all the people. Collin likes doing this one because a lot of the kids from his school participate. He actually did not mind the swim this year compared to last year. The swim is in an above ground pool which can be intimidating. Because he had not swam or even practiced since last year, I had no idea how he would perform. Once he jumped in the pool, I was very nervous for him until I saw that he had two laps left to swim.  When he got out of the water, he did not look too exhausted so I was very relieved to see this. He got on the bike quickly and finished just as quick so we knew he passed up a lot of kids along the way. It was great to see them finished at the finish line. His first question was “When can I get a popsicle?”

Splash N Dash
We try to do this race every year because a good friend is the race director and her son started this race as his eagle scout project to raise money and awareness for a disease his twin brother and his sister have. It’s not Collin’s favorite because there is no bike in vault. It’s only a swim and a run. However, that makes for a much faster race and he can go home sooner than other races.  He struggled a bit in the swim but got out of pool smiling and focused to start his run. As soon as he  crossed the finish line, he announced that he didn’t want to do these types of races ever, ever again. Dad and I both know the reason why but also knew that he just finished the race it was probably emotional about it.

Waterpark Race
Collin’s favorite race of the year is one that’s held within a local waterpark. Not only does he enjoy the race, but he also loves the fact that all racers can enjoy the park for several hours after the race. I was very proud of him during this race because he seemed focused but also looked like he was having a good time.  This year, I stayed after the race and enjoyed playing with the boys at the park. I could tell that Collin enjoyed this too. We might have to come back during the summer because we all had so much fun.
