Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Races

The day was finally here!  Dad and Collin got to race their pinewood derby cars they have been working on for several weeks now.  Collin's selected a camo look with an angled design.  When it came time to name his car, he named it Ambush.  I don't know if he had help selecting the name but I thought it was a great one.  Dad named his Broken Arrow.  Here are the pictures of the cars while they were being weighed and then checked in:

Collin's car = Ambush

Dad's car = Broken Arrow
While there, we saw the scout that won last year bring his car in.  It looked sleek and fast.  I saw Collin's face instantly change and he became said.  He said to me later that "it's not fair that he is going to win again.  His dad helped him."  I then told Collin things like that are going to happen his entire life and than he could only control if he followed the rules and had fun with Dad while doing it.  I let him know how proud I was of him coming up with his car design and building, painting, cutting at least 95% of his car.  He only needed adult assistance with the cutting and some of the drawing.  He seemed to be a little better after that.

The morning of the race, it was freezing but at least not as windy as last time.  We had to wait for the Tigers and Wolves race before it was the Bear's turn.  Ambush was in the 2nd heat of 21 heats and won 1st!  I loved seeing the smile on his face when his car came across the finish line.

Eli, Collin and Beckett.  Eli and Beckett's cars came in 1st and 2nd.  Collin is being a great sport.

In the next several heats, Ambush was consistent with speed but not fast enough to win the heat.  The car came in 2nd and 3rd.  Collin was still really happy with how he did and it did not bother him that he did not win a trophy or any of the other awards for design, color, theme, etc.  He was really happy to be hanging out with his friends and cheering when their car was racing.  After all of the Scout cars raced, it was time for Dad's to race in the Open heat.  These cars were SUPER fast, so Dad did not win...but he did have one of the best looking cars...and had fun watching the racing.
