We hear the news we were waiting to hear Thursday night that
the RV was ready to go. We could pick it
up in the morning when they open at 7am.
We got up Friday morning excited to be continuing our journey in the
RV. I was excited, too, because we would
get to see some of Arizona still.
We arrived at the repair shop to find out that the RV was
out of gas. They had used the generator
too much. Glad we moved the food to two
ice chests because it would have ruined in the RV frig. Turns out, that happened anyway because water
got into the Ziplock bags of food in the ice chests. Not happy about throwing away all of the food
we bought and did not get a chance to eat even some of it. Now, we will need to add stopping at a
grocery store on our list. Anyway, the
shop did get some gas but the RV still did not work….something about the gas
getting soaked by the engine. So, they
had to get more gas. We ended up waiting
for the RV for another 2 hours after we got there.
Finally, we left around 1pm and headed North through New
Mexico and spending the night at Chinle, Arizona. It would take us over 9 hours to get there but
we were happy to be on the road again.
Six hours into the drive and West of Albuquerque, one of the tires on
the Jeep trailer blew. We had not idea
about it until a truck driver pointed to the back. We weren’t sure what he was motioning to but
we knew to pull over. We drove another
10 miles to a casino and truck stop.
There, a mobile tire repair person was called. While waiting, Collin and I had dinner at
Dairy Queen. He loves cheeseburgers that
have nothing but cheese and the hamburger.
We have noticed that places in El Paso and New Mexico load up the kid’s
hamburgers including adding onions. What
kid eats all of that? We made the most
of the “rest stop” by talking about what president is on US coins, which fast
food place has the best French fries and people watching.
We were on the road again in 45 minutes. Was that it for the trip? Could we make it to our destination without any
more unplanned stops? I should not have
thought that because within 30 minutes, we noticed lots of car tail lights
ahead. We thought it might be a
wreck. Our GPS said it was a flood. I assumed that was not correct. It had rained but not much and not for very
long. Well, it was enough rain to cause
a mudslide and flooding over the highway.
We were moving slowly using the one lane that was covered in mud but not
flooded. I had NEVER seen anything like
it.
With the three delays we already had from the start of the
day, we were not going to be at the RV campground until close to midnight. The campground was in the Canyon de Chelly
National Park so there were not street lights.
It was SO dark which made it hard to see the roads and signs. Plus, the GPS seemed to be sending us to the
wrong place. We thought we were going
slow enough but apparently not because we passed the RV campground sign. Now, Dad had to turn the RV pulling a trailer
around on a single lane road in the dark.
After 20 minutes or so, he did it!
I was so proud of him. There was
no way I could do that.
The campground was not only remote, it did not have any hook
ups. Plus, we could not run the
generator after 10pm. Therefore, we did
not have A/C and that meant the frig would not work. We would have lost all of our food
anyway. Dad did not think about this
when he reserved the spot. At this
point, I just wanted to sleep from such a long, interesting day.
