We FINALLY were able to make it to a kid's workshop at the Home Depot near our house. I have known that Timmy and then now Leah have been attending workshops near their house for a few years. These are on the first Saturday of the month in the morning which is the main reason why we have not been. Collin usually has something sport related preventing us from going. I did give up for awhile and forgot about it until Mimi sent a reminder email. I could not believe it that we did not have plans for Saturday morning. I told Collin about it and he was interested but did not show too much excitement. I assumed that was because he was having a hard time understanding what he would be doing at the workshop. I was a little surprised that he did not ask if any of his friends would be there because he usually asks this with whatever we do.
When we arrived 20 minutes after the workshop started, there were already 30 kids there. I was hopeful there were kits left...and their were. Collin liked that he got his own smock with his name on it and then happily took the chalkboard door hanger kit. We found a spot and got to work. I had him look at the instructions and use the hammer to put the wood pieces together. He was great with the hammer and did not hit his or my fingers. I did help with the glue. He then selected the colors he wanted to paint the outer edges with. Dad was there, too, but shopping for items we needed...and just what Home Depot wanted him to do. He did stop by a few times to check in on the progress and take pictures.
At one point, Collin saw a few kids walk by that had their smock on and multiple pins from previous workshops. He liked the idea that he would be getting a pin after he finished. When he did finish, he showed the ladies working the workshop his finished product. They gave him an achievement certificate and a pin which he immediately wanted to add to his smock. They also gave him a piece of chalk to use with the board. They thought of everything.
Collin asked if he could do this again. "Mom, be sure to put this on your calendar so you won't forget". When we got home later, he did make sure I put on my calendar the upcoming workshops.

Painting the outside of the hanger. He was not happy that he could not clean off his brush between colors but figured out he could turn it over or use the sides for each color. |

The finished product proudly hung on his door. "Only dogs allowed...no parents". He thought of what to write all by himself. |
Meanwhile, Timmy and Leah did great at the Home Depot near them. Here they are proudly displaying their finished door hangers.
