Nancy and Collin - Painting and Shooter Gun Buddies

Aunt Nancy was in town for a few days for her high school reunion.  We were busy with activities and friends in town for the weekend so we did not get to see her until this afternoon when Mimi and Dustin stopped by for a quick visit before heading to the airport.  When they arrived, Collin announced that he wanted to paint.  He mentioned it earlier today and I said he could later this afternoon.  The kid did not forget and still wanted to paint.  Nancy joined him and they both had a great time.

While the paintings dried, Collin opened his birthday present from Nancy since she will not be in town for his birthday next month.  He opened the presents and immediately yelled "shooter guns!"  Nancy got him not one, but two, Nerf guns.  These were the same guns that he played with and loved when we visited the cousins last month.  He quickly opened both packages and showed Nancy how to load the guns.  They then started shooting the guns at each other.  Collin saw that Daddy was sleeping so he came up and shoot Daddy in the chest.  It scared Daddy awake and .... he did not like being woken up. So....we quickly figured out another place for Collin to shoot his guns.  He and Nancy started "target" practice at the back door and had a great time.

Ready.....Aim....

Fire!!!
They had a great time playing.  It was hard for Nancy to leave but she had to so she would not miss her flight.  After she left, Collin and I continued playing with the guns in the hallway and guest room.  We had so much fun!

Taking Care of Mommy

Because we have company coming into town today and through the weekend, I was cleaning up the at least the guest bedroom last night knowing that I would not have time or feel like it when I got home.  In the bedroom, I had stashed a Hot Wheels racetrack that Mimi got from a garage sale or was Dustin's.  It was not fully put together because there were pieces missing that I did not figure out until I got to that point.  Collin still had fun playing with it not knowing the potential if it was completely put together.

I shut the door to the bedroom as I was taking this thing apart because I did not want Collin to see me and through a fit because I was putting it away.  I had taken most of it apart and was struggling with one of the bigger, longer pieces.....which I remember having trouble fitting this piece in the first place.  I pulled and pulled and pulled....and it came out right into my lower lip into my mouth and hit the side of my cheek before hitting my back top molars.  I was a little dazed and about to faint right after that happened.  I could hear Collin calling for me about this time.  I yelled out where I was which hurt to do.  He opened the door and started to tell me what he wanted when he stopped and saw that I was bleeding.  "Why are you bleeding on your lip Mommy?  Does it hurt?"  I told him that I was OK but could he get Daddy in the living room for me.

Collin did leave the room presumably to get Daddy while I turned around to look in the mirror at the damage to my lip.  No wonder he saw the blood.  I had torn up my lower lip pretty good and my jaw was hurting by now.  Collin entered the room at this time which an ice pack in his had.  "I did not get Daddy to help me.  I got this from the refrigerator all by myself Mommy.  Here...."  Awwwwww.....that made the pain go away for a brief moment because here was my little man helping his Mommy out.  I put the ice pack on my lip just in time because it was swelling already.  He sat there a little while with me before I asked for a wet napkin to wipe up some of the blood.  He left the room to go get it but never came back because he got distracted.  Well, at least I know he is a normal 4 year old that easily is distracted.

I told him later that I appreciated him helping me and getting me the ice pack.  He was not interested in talking and walked away.  Yep, back to our routine at night.  He knew that bath time was near.....

"Where am I in the picture?"

Tonight, I pulled out old pictures because someone posted a picture of Daddy on Facebook from 11 years ago. I was trying to find my set of the pictures and talk to Daddy about that event (a 24 hr race he was in). Collin loved looking at the pictures and asking questions about the people in the pictures. There were several of Daddy and Grandma H from when Daddy was a kid and then durning high school. If Collin was particularly interested in a picture, he would take it from me, run over to Daddy and show it to him while laughing and talking about the picture. He wanted to know where Daddy's hair was and who the other people where in thr picture. We were all having fun as it when like this for 10 min or so. Mimi was over and liked looking through pictures of people on Daddy's side of the family. Then, Collin got frustrated because he was not in any of the pictures. "Where am I?". We would tell him that he was not born yet. "Well, then we're was I? In the sky? In Mommy's belly?". If he did not like the responses, he asked more questions and then would look at the pictures in the other books looking for him in the picture. When he did not find any pictures, he left the table, got one of his baby scrapbooks off the shelf, came back to the table, pushed the pictures we were looking at to the side and started looking through the book. "Awwww...look at me as a baby! Why are you holding a bottle?". Flipping the page, he exclaimed "Look at my fluffy cheeks!". He laughed after that and pointed out more pictures of a chubby little baby Collin. He did this through two other of his scrapbooks before it was time for a bath. He was happy because we were looking at pictures of him. Now, if he could only have this focus when it comes to bath and getting read for bed. It's still a fut and exhausting most nights.

"Whole Wide Word"

These days, the phrase "whole wide world" is used a lot even if it does not make sense in the sentence.

Collin:  "Mommy, I am really hungry and like marshmallows in the whole wide world"

Collin:  "Your are not my best friend in the whole wide world" which is usually the sentence after I have told him that he cannot have or do what he wants to at the moment.

Collin:  "Mommy, I love you most in the whole wide world" which is not too far after he has told me that I am not his best friend.  Make up your mind little guy!

No matter what he says or how he says it to me, I do love you Collin the most in the whole wide world.

Weekend Get-a-Way

The three of us got out of town with friends for the weekend.  We have been working on several extra "projects" in addition to work that have caused us to work longer hours and not be able to relax as much as we would like over the weekend.  Instead of waiting at the airport and have the horrible experience that a lot of people are having with the airlines these days, we decided to get out of town somewhere that a 4 hour or less car ride could take us to.  Friends of ours told us about a place they like going to, so we went there...and they joined us.  It's a cute little art town and not much more to it but we had a great time.

We arrived Friday afternoon and had lunch at a local cafe and then stopped by to look at a few of the shops near the cafe.  Collin was fascinated with the jewelry and kept wanting to show me the shiny pieces.  If they felt "soft", those were is favorite.  Soft was really smooth...it look me a little while to figure that one out.  Then, we checked into the motel.  We took a nap which felt great!  Collin and I got up before Daddy and decided to swim in the motel swimming pool.  The pool was old school because the deep end was 11ft deep and the "shallow" end quickly got to 5ft within ten steps.  At least there were steps so Collin could play around these.  He swam back and forth to me until Daddy got up and joined us.  Collin swam back and forth between us before he got out and jumped in the pool from the side.  Daddy and I then took turns throwing him up in the air for him to land in the water and swim to one of us.  He LOVED this.  We swam for over an hour before the other couple and their kids, Alex and Ellie arrived.  They unpacked and we headed to dinner at a local German restaurant.  The buffet was great.  After dinner, we went to the biergarten in back and listen and danced to music until after 9pm.  It was hard to leave because the kids were having so much fun dancing with each other and then one of us.  We were all tired from the long day though and headed back to the motel.

On Saturday, we hung out at the local creek for a few hours.  It was Collin's first time to play in a creek and also chute down the small rapids.  He did not know there were fishes in there until about an hour into the fun.  Fortunately, he was having so much fun that he did not want to get out when he saw them.  He actually wanted his goggles so he could look in the water as he was flowing with the current to see the fish.  He did ask about snakes and occasionally would say that he saw one.  We were all on the look out for snakes and did not see one so I think Collin was just saying it for attention.

We stayed for almost three hours.  Fortunately, we did bring snacks and water so we did not have to leave when the kids, or we, got hungry...which was about an hour after arriving.  I got in to because it was hot out and the water was COLD.  It was probably 65 degrees.  It felt great once you got used to it because it cooled you down from the 103 degree day.

We left so the kids could rest before we headed for the treat that night.  The men stayed at the motel to watch the kids or nap with the ladies went shopping.  It was good to get away and explore the cute little town.  We found an estate sale in a house that had a gorgeous view of the creek, went to a few antiques stores and then bought some fudge.  It was time to get back for dinner before heading to an outdoor theater.  We first ate at a local Mexican restaurant before heading to the outdoor theater.
Collin heard the announcer say that there was going to be gun fire on the left side and to be aware of this for the kids in the audience.  He was VERY interested in the gun fire and wanted to know why they were going to do it and when.  I was shocked at how attentive he was through the entire play which lasted over 2 hours including the short intermission.  I figured out why he was so attentive....  After every act, he would ask, "Are they going to shoot the guns now?" over and over again.  By intermission, they had not had the war scene yet so he did not want to leave even though it was after 9pm.  He wanted to stay and watch the fight scene.  So...when the that scene happened, I did not expect him to be as scared as he was.  He wanted to leave the place.  Fortunately, it was over fairly quickly and we stayed the rest of the time.  When the play was over, the actors stood by the exit for the audience members to meet them.  Collin walked up to two of the army guys and told them, "I was scared of the shoots" (he meant shooting).  They told him it was pretend and that all of the guys were fine.  He seemed to be good with that explanation.

We went back to the motel to watch some TV for a few minutes because the boys were wound up from the show.  The next morning, we met our friends for breakfast and let the kids play on the playground on the motel grounds before packing up and heading back home.

Grandma H came over for dinner and to hear about our trip.  Collin was rude to and did not want to talk to anyone and especially about the trip.  Within 15 minutes, he was sleeping on the couch.  This was before 7pm.  When Daddy went to move him after we had dinner, Collin did not wake up at all.  He was out for the night.  Guess he had a good weekend too.  :)

Healthy Collin

Collin continues to be healthy since he was sick for almost a week.  His eyes did take a few more days to get back to their normal color.  The drops really did help...but that was an experience trying to get the drops in his eyes twice a day.  He was great the first day but did not like to have them in the morning.  He is not a morning kid so, getting drops in his eyes when he was still not awake was not fun.

The challenge now has been not watching so many movies and laying around.  He thinks that he gets to watch a movie every night and sleep in the playroom.  I thought this might be an issue after he was well...but while he was sick, it worked great.  He is OK to sleep in his room again especially because he is still sleeping on the bottom bunk in the "fort".

He has seen a lot of friends over the last few days because they all missed him. He had Daddy went to an indoor trampoline park after school earlier in the week because 1) it was raining, 2) to have fun and 3) to wear him out so he would sleep good that night. It worked....and Daddy was sore from jumping for an hour.  Here is a picture from the place's website since Daddy and Collin had so much fun jumping and did not stop to take any pictures.

Saige and Linden came briefly a few times to play and he went over to their house to watch Shrek because Ethan was home from a long trip outside the state.

We also went to see my coworker that recently had a baby.  He had a great time playing with 4 girls in the playroom. Three of the girls were my other coworkers that also came over to play and help out the new mommy.  Collin was enamored with the eight year old girl and followed her every where.  If she was thirty, so we he.  If she did not want to eat, he was not ready either.  It was too cute!  I would have thought he would have played with the five year old but he did not really want to have anything to do with her.

We also had a birthday party to go to. I have figured out that we could attend a birthday party EVERY weekend if we RSVPd to every one of them but I an not that crazy.  This time, it was Audrey's birthday that was at an indoor playground.  He and Audrey had fun running around, climbing and jumping.  I have pictures but most of them are blurry.  The two of them did not sit still long enough for me to get a good picture...but that shows how much fun they were having.

The first few pictures are of the jumping pillow which is where the two of them spent most of their time.  Even Daddy joined in for a little bit.  One a few times did Collin go play in the other areas of the playground to either climb up high to then slide back down or to drive two of the trains around the tracks.  These trains were popular too so he had to wait too long for his turn and gave up a few times.

This noise maker was the hit of the party waiting for the cupcakes.  The noise in the room was a little much at times but the kids were having fun out doing each other.
Mommy raced Sunday morning while Daddy and Collin stayed home and rested.  They met Grandma H for breakfast where Collin ate 4 small pancakes and two eggs. He must have been hungry from not eating much the last few days.  They came home and rode bikes (both the "attached together bike" and Collin's bike) before I got home.  I did not win a medal but enjoyed the morning and learned a few things that I need to work on before the next race.

"Do I Have to Get a Shot?"

Because Collin still had a slight fever yesterday and his eyes are very itchy, I was able to get a doctor appointment this afternoon. I needed to be at work so Daddy picked Collin up from Grandma H's were he was that morning to take him to the appointment. On the way there, Collin asked if he was going to get a shot. He already asked me that morning and I told him that I did not think he was going to. Daddy told him the same thing.

When they arrived at the doctor office and where lead back to the patient area, a nurse came in to get the room ready. Collin asked her about getting a shot. She told him that she was just getting the room ready and he would have to wait for the doctor. She left and Daddy said that you could see the stress on his face about getting a shoot. He told Daddy that he did not want to sit on the exam table because that is where he got the shots the last time he was there. The doctor finally came in and Collin immediately asked, "Am I going to get a shot?". She said she will need to see and asked if he wanted to get on the table. He said "no" and showed her that he would remain sitting where he was. He did eventually get on the table for her to finish the exam. She said that he have the virus that was going around but that he was on the tail end of it now that the fever was gone. She told him about drops for his eyes to help them feel better. She said he has grown 2.5 in since his 4year old appointment and he has only gained a pound all that time. He weighs 37.5 lbs which is actually down 41 lbs from several weeks ago. He could have lost most of that during the last few days because he did not eat much.

After the appointment, Daddy and Collin surprised me by stopping by work. They came up to my office and Collin knew exactly where to go. He enjoyed visiting with some of his "friends" and wanted to know where the ball was that he plays with when he is there. They stayed less than 30 min and I loved every minute of it.

Tonight, I thought putting drops into Collin's eyes would be difficult or at least not without at fight. I announced after bath that it was time for me to put the drops in his eyes. He said, "I can do it" and he wanted the drops for me. He tiled his head back, put the drop bottle close to his eye and then said "nope, I cannot do it" and then handed the bottle to me. When I did the drops, he stood there still and let me do it. He knew these would help his eyes and he could not wait for the drops, I suppose. The rest of the night was back to our usual routine. Yeah, my baby is feeling better!!! Pictures to follow......

Sick Little Boy....Still

After 4 1/2 days, Collin is STILL sick.  For the first few days, he only had a high fever but no other symptoms.  Today and yesterday afternoon, the fever did come down (hovered around 102 for the first few days) to 100 and even 99 but now he does have a runny nose and watery, swollen eyes.  I am thinking he might have allergies because of the watery, swollen eyes but did not think allergies came with a fever.  He is going to the doctor tomorrow so we will find out more.

At night, I have been sleeping with him on the futon in the playroom or having him on our bed because he does have a hard time getting comfortable and going to sleep.  He also wakes up in the middle of the night close to 3am wanting water and a cold rag to wipe his eyes.  Saturday night was the best though.  He woke up three different times to say, "Mommy, Are you there?"  I responded that I was and then he said "I love you".  Awwww....that made the sleepless nights and long, tired days worth it.

Most of the days, he slept or did not want to do much.  He did have a lot of energy yesterday and this morning so I took advantage of that by doing little projects with him.  That way, he did not spend the entire day watching movies like he had been.  Yesterday, we colored.  Today, he helped me shred paper in the office which he loves to do.  He really likes to dump the shredded paper out of the bin into the larger recycle bag.  We also made a Lego storage box out of an old diaper box I kept for days like today.  He really liked picking out the colors, coloring and helping me tape up the box.  He did not pick out purple or pink because "those are girl colors, right?"  I think the box turned out really good.

After making the box, he wanted to make a house out of marshmallows for his "guys" and cars.  He sure was in an art mood.  We did start making the house but did not finish because it needs to dry a little before we do more to it.

During this time, he has been great taking his temperature by himself.  Sometimes, he would say "it's time to take my temperature", walk over to the kitchen, turn the thermometer on and then take his temperature.  He always asked what the number was after the beep which meant that he could take the thermometer out.

Notice he is not wearing "soft" PJs (his favorite flannel ones).  He announced one of the nights early on  that he did not like his soft PJs anymore.  I wonder if it was because he was SO hot in them when his temperature was closer to 103.  I like this because he wore the other PJs that have been ignored for so long like the glow-in-the-dark dinosaur ones in the pictures above and below.

Even though he is sick and not feeling good, his sense of humor did come out a few times like when I was taking pictures of our art project.

Ignoring the funny face (hard to do, I know), see how swollen his eyes are?  He has a spot under his left eye from wiping at it so much.

I sure hope the doctor can tell me what we can do so my little boy can get better soon.

Sick Little Boy

Since we came home from our cousin trip, Collin has run a high fever.  Other than the fever, he does not have any other symptoms.  It started Tuesday night so we stayed home all day for the July 4th holiday.  I would have liked to have participated in the parade and seen the fireworks but it was also nice to stay home and spend it with my family.  I left only to pick up some lunch and then again to get groceries.  Collin slept most of the day yesterday.  When he was awake, he did not have that much energy and did not eat at all.  Around 6pm, he woke up and asked me if he could go to his bed.  I knew the poor dude did not feel good because it's usually a fight to get him to start getting ready for bed.  He did want me to sleep next to him which I did for about 20 minutes until he fell asleep.  I "escaped" only to be caught and hour later when he woke to retrieve me from the kitchen table.

Last night, he slept in our bed so I could get him water and check on him throughout the night.  He was burning up when I came home from swimming that morning so I gave him some more medicine which does reduce the fever temporarily.  It's been ranging from 99 to 102.5 degrees.

When he woke this morning, he asked Daddy why he was not sleeping next to him when he woke up.  He told him that he had to get up last night because Collin was kicking and head butting Daddy. Daddy then asked him if he was in a race and Collin said "No, I was having a bad dream and was fighting it off."  Daddy then asked him if he was scared and Collin said "No".   Who knows if this is really what he was dreaming about or if he even remember but how cute was this explanation especially coming from the little guy that does not feel good and did not sleep much that night.

Grandma H watched him today.  She said he slept most of the day or laid around.  He is still running a fever and will stay home from school tomorrow.  She said he asked for me several times today.  When I get home from work, he will have plenty of "Mommy Time".

He must have caught a "bug" on our trip.  At least the other kids did not get sick and he was not sick on the way home.

Best Buddies

This picture really sums up how much fun Collin had the last few days.  He and Hollis played together as if it was just a week or so since they had seen each other.  They faught and played like best buddies.  They will have many, many more years of fun.  Daddy and I encourage this because of so many fun, great memories we have growing up with our cousins.

Night Time - Potty Training...Maybe?

While Collin was at his cousin's, he saw that none of them wore Pull Ups at night.  Neither did Will at the house house we visited.  When he was getting ready for bed on our last night, I asked him when he thought he would start wearing underwear to bed instead of Pull Ups.  He told me he would soon.  I just smiled at him.  I heard that it takes longer for boys and for first-born boys but thought we should start trying again now that he is almost 5 years old.

Last night, we had movie night which means we put the futon down into a bed in the playroom and then watch a movie.  Last night, it was my turn to pick so I picked Ant Bully because Daddy had not seen it yet.  We all crawled onto the futon and watched the movie.  I was shocked that Collin had not fallen asleep after the movie was over knowing that he must be tired from the drive home that day from his cousin's house.  He did fall asleep after I laid there for about 20 minutes.  I left and got into my bed which I could not wait to do after not being in it for the last two nights.

Collin woke up around 3:30am needing to go potty.  He did go pee and then got back in bed.  He woke up again at 5:30am having to go potty again.  This time, he had to poo.  At least he was waking up to go potty.  I wondered if it was because we talked about it the night before.....or it was because he did not feel good.  The last time he got up, he was BURNING UP.  I gave him a fever reducer and crawled in bed with him.  He did end up falling asleep and did not wake up again until...9am!  I knew he was not feeling good.  He was still a little warm but had a lot of energy.  He stayed awake for about 2 hours before falling asleep....on the floor.  You know he had to be tired because he fell on the floor.  He woke up an hour later because he had to go potty which he did do and then went back to the floor.

#1 = Maybe he is learning to get up when he is sleeping to go potty and

#2 = My little boy is not feeling well.  He and Daddy are napping together right now.

Cousin's Trip #2 - 3 Days of Fun

Collin had so much fun with his cousins Ben, Will and Hollis last year that we decided we needed to make an annual trip to see them.  We were a little later this year than I intended but we did finally make it to see them this year.  Grandma H went with us this time.  Collin did not sleep the entire 4 hour car ride there and did really good.  He was busy watching his movies to ask too many questions like "Are we there yet?".   We stopped for lunch before continuing to the cousin's house.  When we arrived, the boys greeted us with Nerf guns.  This was a very familiar scene because this is how they greeted us a year and a half ago but with different kind of guns.  Collin quickly joined in and they played like this for at least the first two hours.  I even played on Will's team a few times and actually had fun too.  You can work up a sweat playing with Nerf guns.  Hollis was feeling left out so I stopped to play with her a little while.

They stopped only long enough to eat dinner and then it was time to relax.  Dinner was baked potatoes and salad.  I loved it but knew that Collin would turn his nose up to both.  He did try a bite of the potato and some of the salad but then sat there the rest of the time until we finished eating.

The next morning, Collin woke up and immediately grabbed a Nerf gun and was ready to play "shooter guns" with his cousins.  But...they were not awake yet.  He would have to wait another 30 minutes.  Later that morning, we all, except Grandma H, loaded up to head to a nearby water park for a few hours.  The kid's pool was a VERY large 2ft 6in deep pool that Hollis and Collin could stand up comfortably in so the Mommies sat at the edge and watched them play.  When they got tired of this, we moved to the slides and lazy river.  Collin was not timid about going down the slides at all.  I was impressed.

Here he is going down the taller slide several times with Hollis.  He stopped a few times to have the large bucket of water spill over him before quickly climbing back up the stairs to go back down again.

There he is waiting his turn to go down the slide

Even though he bumped his head, he said he was ready to go again

Getting splashed before getting in line again
The kids took a snow cone break.  Collin has not had one of these in 2+ years but was one of the cleanest eaters.  He was smart and asked for a straw to sip the syrup out of his cone.  He saw Ben doing this.  He ate most of it before he was ready to get back in the pool.  They swam a little longer before we had to go.

Collin and Will making friends with another boy

Hollis and Collin playing with the ball

We had to leave the water park because Collin and I needed to get cleaned up quickly before heading North to see a long time friend of mine and her family.  She has an older little girl and a 4-year old boy, Will.  Collin said, "another Will like my cousin Will".  The boys had a blast together even though there is a year age difference.  After eating a yummy dinner, the boys played outside on the swings and slide before driving around in Will's new 4-wheel car.  Collin was a passenger at first and then Will asked if he wanted to drive.  I did not think Collin would but he surprised me by not only driving around but doing it for at least 20 minutes before the battery started to die.  He drove it outside the fence and to the garage so the battery could be charged.

Doesn't he look like he rules this backyard?

The boys then played on other scooters, bikes and bulldozer toys before Will needed to go inside and take a bath.  Collin was not ready to leave so he was invited to take a bath too.  That helped me for when we got back to the cousin's house so I was fine with it.  The boys got along great in the tub taking turns playing with a boat and a Hot Wheel car ramp stuck to the bathtub wall.  When we were getting ready to leave, Will asked to see our car.  Too cute!  He and his parents walked out with us to check out our car before we left.

I was shocked that Collin did not nap on the way back to the cousin's house but I knew he was tired.  We arrived just before 9pm and knew he needed to go to bed soon before he because a big cranky butt.  It did not take long to see this cranky butt displayed so I took him to bed right away.  He fought to fall asleep but did sleep hard that night and did not get up until close to 8am.

In the morning, we went to a local splash pad for the kids to get outside and stop playing shooter guns.  The Mommies and Grandma H were ready to not step on "bullets" and hear the shooting.  Even though there was water, the kids enjoyed sliding, climbing and running around in the other area of the splash pad away from the water.  Collin was really proud of himself climbing up a structured and told me to get the camera to take his picture.  Here he is with Ben at the top.  He climbed all he way up and then back down by himself.

We headed back to pick up Grandma H and meet Rob, the kid's Dad, for lunch at Braum's.  We were all craving it last night after I mentioned that I was craving an ice cream on the way back from my friend's house but could not find a Dairy Queen or a Sonic on the way home.  What a treat Braum's was.  Collin ate fantastic and wanted an ice cream cone like the other kids.  I assumed I would get to finish what he could not but he ended up eating the entire cone.  What a little piglet!  Guess playing with cousins and driving a little car last night made him hungry.

Heading back to the house, they all knew that it was time for us to head back home.  Hollis announced that she wanted to come to our house to swim.  She did not understand that we lived hours away.  Her Mommy and I talked about when they could come down for a visit with us.  The kids all home it;s sometime soon.  What a great trip.

Being silly on the ride back.  Collin looks like he is sad because he knows he has to head home soon.

Hollis did not want to be left out of the craziness in the car.
