Tri Madness

It’s just the way the triathlons were scheduled that it turned out: competed in three of them over a 3 to 4 week period in addition to playing lacrosse in touch football... and scout activities and going to school. He is not a boredkid for sure.

Texans Tri
The first triathlon Collin competed in is a huge event because it’s the largest kids triathlon in the city with over 3000 participants. It feels that way also while waiting for your child to compete and maneuvering around all the people. Collin likes doing this one because a lot of the kids from his school participate. He actually did not mind the swim this year compared to last year. The swim is in an above ground pool which can be intimidating. Because he had not swam or even practiced since last year, I had no idea how he would perform. Once he jumped in the pool, I was very nervous for him until I saw that he had two laps left to swim.  When he got out of the water, he did not look too exhausted so I was very relieved to see this. He got on the bike quickly and finished just as quick so we knew he passed up a lot of kids along the way. It was great to see them finished at the finish line. His first question was “When can I get a popsicle?”

Splash N Dash
We try to do this race every year because a good friend is the race director and her son started this race as his eagle scout project to raise money and awareness for a disease his twin brother and his sister have. It’s not Collin’s favorite because there is no bike in vault. It’s only a swim and a run. However, that makes for a much faster race and he can go home sooner than other races.  He struggled a bit in the swim but got out of pool smiling and focused to start his run. As soon as he  crossed the finish line, he announced that he didn’t want to do these types of races ever, ever again. Dad and I both know the reason why but also knew that he just finished the race it was probably emotional about it.

Waterpark Race
Collin’s favorite race of the year is one that’s held within a local waterpark. Not only does he enjoy the race, but he also loves the fact that all racers can enjoy the park for several hours after the race. I was very proud of him during this race because he seemed focused but also looked like he was having a good time.  This year, I stayed after the race and enjoyed playing with the boys at the park. I could tell that Collin enjoyed this too. We might have to come back during the summer because we all had so much fun.

Lacrosse - Silver Champions!!

What a fun inaugural season of lacrosse! I had no idea how much fun this sport could be.  Since the last post, Collin continued to play well and very aggressive especially trying to help his team members get a goal or to get a goal himself. The team played well enough to land in the silver bracket for the championship games. One game before the championship game, our goalie quit so the team was in a pickle. Collin stepped up to play goalie for half of each game because Coach thought he had a really good hand-eye coordination. However, the coach did say that he hated to lose Collin off the field. Turns out that that decision was a good one because the last game went into overtime with Collin as a goalie. The team that scored first would win. Collin stopped an attempt at the goal, passed it to a team member close to him who then passed it to another team member who eventually scored the winning goal. My heart is actually pounding again as it did at that moment that play happened. So exciting to see the kids play so well until the very last second.  That play earned our team the honor of being the Silver Bracket Champions. Collin was awarded the game ball for that last save that made the difference. So proud of these boys!

He is in jersey number 1 in these pictures.  How ironic, right?

Cub Scouts - Webelo Adventures

Even though Collin had to miss the spring campout because of lacrosse and a triathlon, we have been busy with scouts this spring.

Capture the flag tug-of-war
This is a favorite of the scouts in the spring. They have tug-of-war between each then and then compete with the parents. The boys especially love trying their hardest to be the parents. Capture the flag is a little list organized but still a lot of fun. I was excited because Collin was at least worn out at the end of the event.

here are all of the boys on one side of the rope

Den Meetings
Collin always looks forward to the monthly den meetings because it’s a chance to hang out with his friends and work on the selected badge activities.  Are usually attend so I can help out the den leader and it’s another chance to hang out with Collin. Here, the boys worked on memorizing the Scout Law and scout responsibilities.  At the end, they were treated with ice cream because their den won for the best table arrangement during the Blue and Gold banquet the month before. I failed to mention that this was also about 8 PM so feeding the boys some sugar and then loading them in the car to go home was a blast for parents. 😦

One of the fun activities I really enjoyed was the nature walk. The boys were supposed to walk about 3 miles while checking out what they saw along the path for the hour and a half it took us to hike those 3 miles. Most of the energy was use to make sure the boys stayed together and didn’t touch any of the plants that looked like poison ivy. That would not have been fun. 😦.

Crossover Ceremony
Just last week, the scouts gathered for the crossover ceremony. Each den has their scouts cross over a bridge one by one to then get painted by the oldest scouts before receiving badges or pins by their den leader. You can tell chi boys are compared to the ones that are not as they cross over the bridge because some perform and engage the audience as they walk across. Collin dabbed as he went across the bridge because that’s thing to do these days. We have another six months of Webelos before his group graduates to Boy Scouts.
